In a significant stride towards improving educational resources and literacy programs within correctional facilities, a special training session was conducted for prison officer-librarians at the Senior Correctional Centre (SCC). This initiative, a collaboration between Book Aid International and the Rainbow Trust Foundation, focused on enhancing the skills of officers in Library Management, Book Processing, and Creating a Book Lending System.

The training aimed to empower the prison officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage the library effectively and to foster a reading culture among the inmates. The sessions were designed to be interactive, practical, and highly informative, covering essential aspects of modern library management.

Library Management training provided the officers with insights into organizing, maintaining, and developing the library to meet the diverse needs of its users. The focus was on creating an environment that encourages reading and learning, helping inmates to access educational materials easily.

Book Processing sessions introduced the officers to the systematic methods of cataloging, classifying, and preserving books. This is crucial for maintaining an organized collection and ensuring that the library’s resources are easily accessible and in good condition for longer periods.

The Creating a Book Lending System module was particularly impactful, equipping the officers with the tools to establish a systematic and user-friendly lending system. This system will allow inmates to borrow books, thereby improving their access to knowledge and aiding in their personal development and rehabilitation.

The training was met with enthusiasm from the participants, who appreciated the opportunity to develop their skills and contribute more effectively to the educational programs at SCC. The success of this training is a testament to the ongoing efforts of Book Aid International and the Rainbow Trust Foundation in promoting literacy and education in underserved communities.

Through initiatives like these, we are making strides in transforming correctional facilities into environments that not only rehabilitate but also educate and inspire. The impact of a well-managed library cannot be underestimated, especially in a setting where access to knowledge can play a crucial role in an individual’s rehabilitation journey.

This collaboration is a shining example of how organizations can come together to create meaningful change, even in the most challenging environments. We look forward to continuing our partnership and expanding our efforts to reach more correctional facilities in the future.
